is dental insurance included in obamacare

The Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare, is designed to make getting necessary healthcare more accessible to all Americans. Among the things the ACA aims to accomplish are making insurance companies accept preexisting conditions, bringing the cost of health in line with what Americans can afford, and holding insurance companies accountable for overcharging customers.

Dental care, while it may be important to many Americans, is almost never considered a necessary medical service. And because the cost of dental care can be prohibitively high, forcing insurance companies to include it into traditional health care could make the cost of health insurance so high as to make the best parts of the ACA little more than a waste of time. For that reason, dental care is not included in the ACA, and most likely never will be.

Dental insurance remains a voluntary type of health coverage. If you are in need of dental care, you can pick up a supplemental health insurance policy to pay for your care, but you cannot get that care under Obamacare. The purpose of the ACA is to bring down the costs of medical attention for all Americans, and requiring insurance companies to include dental care would have had the opposite effect, pushing the cost of health insurance further up and out of the reach of most Americans living at or near the low income level.

For now, we will have to be content that the Obama Administration has forced insurance companies to accept preexisting conditions such as diabetes and asthma. There is no question about whether more health care reform is needed, but just forcing insurers to accept those 2 groups has made health insurance available to millions of Americans who were unable to get it before. Yes, having dental insurance is a good thing, but being able to pay for the medical costs of millions of Americans who were not able to get insurance before is a very big step in the right direction.
